| | | Meditation Name: | Candle Meditation | | Minimum Length: | 1 min | | Maximum Length: | 60 min | | Suggested Length: | 15 min | | Audio Available? | Not at this time | | Date Entered: | 8/23/2003 | | Last Modified: | 2/8/2006 | Short Description A meditation where you focus your attention on a lit candle
| Long Description This is a great meditation to use with your favorite candle. The point of this meditation is to focus your attention on the candle exclusively for as long as you can without blinking. When you need to blink, you do so and continue with the meditation.
| Meditation Script Instructions Please follow proper candle burning procedures to ensure a safe meditative experience. Light a candle and place it somewhere in front of you, making sure it is on a level, non-flammable surface. Once the candle is in a safe position, follow the directions below.
| Meditation Script Following the safety warnings above and those listed on your candle, light your candle and place it somewhere in front of you. It should be close to eye level so you’re not forced to turn your head to see the flame. Sit comfortably and begin to relax. In a moment, I’m going to ask you to take a deep breath through your nose, making sure your stomach rises as you inhale. I’ll then ask you to hold your breath for two seconds and then to breathe out through your mouth. Go ahead and take that deep breath now. Hold for two seconds and breathe out through your mouth. Repeat this three times now. Continue to breathe normally as you allow your body and mind to relax. Begin to stare at the candle in front of you. Focus all of your attention on the candle flame. Try to hold off the urge to blink for as long as possible. This may feel a bit uncomfortable, but try to maintain your gaze until you absolutely need to blink. Go ahead and blink and once again focus on the candle flame. As thoughts enter your mind notice them, and then return your gaze to the candle. Your eyes may water at some point during this meditation. That is perfectly normal. If you need to, you can slowly wipe your eyes. Otherwise, just continue to focus your attention on the candle flame. Keep your eyes open throughout the length of this meditation. If your vision begins to blur, simply refocus on the candle flame. Continue to stare at the candle flame for the next few minutes. Go ahead and end this meditation for today by taking a deep breath and resting your eyes for a moment.
